എന്റെ വായനയിൽ നിന്ന് (13)
(ലേഖനം)

കാട് - ഇ. എം. കോവൂരിന്റെ പ്രശസ്തമായ നോവൽ.  ഒരു ബിസിനസ്‌ ലോകം.  പൊതുവേ എനിക്ക് താൽപ്പര്യമില്ലാത്ത വിഷയം.  എങ്കിലും, വായിച്ചു മുന്നോട്ടു നീങ്ങി.  അറിഞ്ഞിരിക്കേണ്ട കാര്യങ്ങൾ. ഒരു കഥ എന്നതിലുപരി കാലികമായി ചിത്രീകരിച്ച കുറെ കാര്യങ്ങൾ.  വായിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ തോന്നി - തീർച്ചയായും ഇത് മലയാള സാഹിത്യത്തിലെ നോവൽ ശാഖയിലെ വേറിട്ട നല്ലൊരുദ്യമം തന്നെ.

The Solitary Reaper (ഏകാകിയായ കൊയ്ത്തുകാരി) - വിശ്വമഹാകവിയുടെ മഹത്തായ കവിത!  പ്രകൃതിഭംഗിയുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ ഏകാകിയായ കൊയ്ത്തുകാരി.  ഞാൻ വായിച്ചു, വീണ്ടും വായിച്ചു, വീണ്ടും...... അതെ, ഓരോ വായനയിലും ആ ചിത്രം, ആ സംഗീതം, ആ കവിത തെളിഞ്ഞു വരാൻ തുടങ്ങി!  മനോഹരമായ ഈ കവിത വായിച്ചിട്ടില്ല എങ്കിൽ ഇതാ:

The Solitary Reaper

Behold her, single in the field,
Yon solitary Highland Lass!
Reaping and singing by herself;
Stop here, or gently pass!
Alone she cuts and binds the grain,
And sings a melancholy strain;
O listen! for the Vale profound
Is overflowing with the sound.

No Nightingale did ever chaunt
More welcome notes to weary bands
Of travellers in some shady haunt,
Among Arabian sands:
A voice so thrilling ne'er was heard
In spring-time from the Cuckoo-bird,
Breaking the silence of the seas
Among the farthest Hebrides.

Will no one tell me what she sings?—
Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow
For old, unhappy, far-off things,
And battles long ago:
Or is it some more humble lay,
Familiar matter of to-day?
Some natural sorrow, loss, or pain,
That has been, and may be again?

Whate'er the theme, the Maiden sang
As if her song could have no ending;
I saw her singing at her work,
And o'er the sickle bending;—
I listened, motionless and still;
And, as I mounted up the hill,
The music in my heart I bore,
Long after it was heard no more.
